Right off the bat, we saw more of the fateful night when Flash and Reverse-Flash traveled through time and caused the death of Barry’s mother. Outside the Tricksters’ rampage, this proved to be a surprisingly eventful week for Wells. For a villain who always has something else up his sleeve, you’d think there’d be another twist or two in Jesse’s fiendish plot to steal a bunch of money. I was also a little disappointed in the resolution to this conflict. The mentally deranged clown villain shtick doesn’t suit everyone as well as it does Hamill. I do wish Graye’s performance had been toned down a little relative to Hamill’s. The impostor/sidekick/successor element was a clever twist. Graye was mostly stuck playing second fiddle to Hamill (which admittedly, is far from the worst position to be in as an actor).

Ignoring the Star Wars reference, my favorite was “It’s my Mona Lisa! My Breaking Bad season five!” Because of course someone that crazy would intimidate his guards into installing a cable TV hookup. Hamill had a lot of great lines this week. But if you’re going to go off the deep end with any Flash villain, why not the Trickster. Sure, the tone of his performance and the Trickster storyline in general was way off-kilter with the rest of the series. Hamill embraced the role, dusting off his iconic Joker voice and merging that with a healthy dose of Hannibal Lecter. The show went gleefully, unabashedly comic book-y this week, what with the hammy villains, the day glo costumes, and even the secret lair. The Flash: Mark Hamill on Returning as The TricksterIt was also a treat to see Hamill tearing up all the scenery he could. It was really a treat to see this episode celebrate DC’s TV legacy in such a profound and loving way. The fact that Trickster’s evil plot involved kidnapping the same man who played the Flash 25 years ago was just icing on the cake.

Fittingly enough, this episode even used stills from the 1990 series to depict James Jesse during his original crime spree. That makes him the second actor on this show (after Amanda Pays) to reprise their role from the previous version. Fans of the 1990 Flash series will of course remember that he played the Trickster on that series as well. Hamill’s guest appearance was the real selling point. The end result was a real jam-packed installment that reinforces the idea that The Flash, when it’s firing on all cylinders, can do superhero TV better than anyone. We saw the show at its most campy and comic book-y with the two Tricksters (Hamill and Davon Graye), but we also saw moments of real darkness and solemnity as the true nature of Harrison Wells was further illuminated. Trickster had a part in the murder of Inertia.Needless to say, this was a really enjoyable episode. During their quest, Mirror Master explained that joining the Rogues wasn't about "wanting" to be one, but why he "needed" to be one. However, Axel joined the Rogues in their revenge quest against Inertia, going against Libra's "New Rogues", Zoom, and Inertia as well. When the Rogues returned, Axel discovered that they were planning to retire and go underground, and that their killing of Bart Allen had been an accident.

Final Crisisįollowing the death of James Jesse, Axel redonned the Trickster gear and began operating with his own crew out of one of the Rogues' old hideouts. His crime was discovered when Detective Chimp found the Helmet of Fate, put it on, and used it to help deduce who the murderer was. Once he arrived to the location in the ad, he had dinner with the students and then killed all five of them.
He later answered an ad from five college students asking for an experienced superhero to train them. The original Trickster then defeated his successor, throwing him into a dumpster and telling him never to become the Trickster again. While the two Tricksters were fighting, the Top gave Jesse's memory back.
He remained with the new Rogues until the "reformed" Rogues attempted to stop Cold. Axel Walker moved to the twin cities with the original purpose of joining the Rogues. After the defeat of Blacksmith, he was offered to join the new Rogues led by Captain Cold, and accepted. He joined Blacksmith's Network and destroyed files from Goldface and Hunter Zolomon for her. A few days later, Trickster was creating troubles in Gotham until he was stopped and captured by Robin. When Penguin was attacked by Tarantula,Trickster tried to stop her, but failed.
As Trickster, he worked a while for the Gotham Crime Lord known as Penguin during the Gotham Gang War.
